      Grassroots Society and Popular Culture
      In 2009 the Institute entered into an agreement with HYI and Chinese Academy of Social Science to organize a two-year advanced training program on “Grassroots Society and Popular Culture”. 2 workshops cum fieldwork were held in Beijing in 2010 and 2011 respectively for 40 young scholars.

      Urban Studies and the China Experience
      The Institute’s connection with East China Normal University began with the joint program on “Experience Metropolitan Shanghai” in 2004. Individual scholars have since joined one of the Institute’s multi-year research clusters, “Global Cities and the Social Life of Finance Capital in Asia” under the project entitled, “Shanghai: the Global City Aspiration and the Transformation of the Everyday”.

      In 2010, the Institute started another advanced training program on “Urban Studies and the China Experience” with HYI, ECNU and New York University for postgraduate students from Hong Kong, China and the USA. Following the successful workshop, the Institute, ECNU and HYI agreed to continue the partnership on the organization of lecture series, annual training workshops for postgraduates, and conferences on diverse social sciences themes, for cross-disciplinary research training of a future generation of scholars in urban studies.

      Workshop on China’s Urban Political Cultures: A Comparative Perspective (May 2012)
      The Workshop on “China’s Urban Political Cultures: A Comparative Perspective” was the first event of this 3-year collaborative program held at HYI from May 4 to 5, 2012. 12 presentations were given at the workshop to construe the concept of political culture broadly.

      The Advanced Training Program on “China Urban Studies: A Comparative Perspective” was the second event of this collaborative program held in Shanghai from June 17 to 24, 2013. 22 trainees were recruited to explore new approaches in their research and develop new ways of conceptualizing China’s urban issues. 2 keynote speeches and 14 lectures were delivered by Chinese Urban Studies experts.       Advanced Training Program on “Inter-Asian Urbanity: Connections and Comparisons” Hong Kong (August 2014)

      This Advanced Training Program is part of “Urban Studies and the China Experience”, a 3-year collaboration between the Institute, the Harvard-Yenching Institute and East China Normal University. This year’s advanced training program will be held in Hong Kong from August 18 – 24. (Details)
