      Abstract

China and Vietnam have had a long history together as neighbours and have a strong common cultural foundation, yet the two countries have also seen turbulent periods in recent times, including a border war in 1979 and the new dynamic arising from increasing ASEAN and US influence. Nowadays, with China’s continuing rise as an economic powerhouse, economic ties between the two countries are increasing and in particular many win-win trade and investment opportunities present themselves despite some remaining ongoing political and diplomatic challenges. Overall, the upside outweighs the downside in the current direction towards a renaissance in Sino-Vietnamese cooperation.

A number of new opportunities and ideas will be discussed to form a better understanding of the promising prospects of Sino-Vietnamese relations. In particular, Hong Kong’s unique, timely and well-positioned supporting role in strengthening Sino-Vietnamese relations will also be discussed.
