This talk explores the exhibitions curated by Red Guards in Shanghai at the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution. Exhibitions were part of the Red Guards’ political repertoire, and were put on for various reasons. Like other displays during the Mao period, Red Guard exhibitions were meant to accompany the political movement and show its “achievements.” At the same time, their curation allowed work units to create an inventory of confiscated objects. Finally, Red Guard exhibits echoed the class education exhibitions of the preceding Socialist Education Campaign, showing the objects of alleged class enemies in order to pattern behavior and cultivate emotion. Using the archival documents of the exhibition at The East is Red Department Store, this talk examines how its Red Guard docents understand that “doing narration is also making revolution.”
