      Abstract

Cong Liu of Jinan University and her co-authors study foreign firms’ responses to boycotts, focusing on China’s widespread boycott against Japan following the Mukden Incident on September 18, 1931. Using newly digitized data on trademark registrations for 20,740 trademarks between 1928 and 1935, they analyze firms’ advertisement strategies through their trademark images. During this Quantitative History Webinar, Cong Liu will explain their difference-in-differences analysis, which indicates that, compared with firms from other nations, Japanese firms were more likely to register trademarks with Chinese-style images after the Mukden Incident. This effect was particularly concentrated in Shanghai and within the processed goods sector.
