On Jan 20, 2026, Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences hosted the public lecture ‘True Colors of China: Yellow, Blue, and Red’ by Prof. Yu Xie of Princeton University in Rayson Huang Lecture Theatre on campus. The event was very well-received with full-house attendance of nearly 300 attendants.
In this enlightening session, Professor Yu Xie delved into the dynamic and multifaceted nature of Chinese culture. Challenging the notion of a static or monolithic identity, Professor Xie introduced a compelling framework that views contemporary Chinese culture as the result of the ongoing synthesis of three core influences, symbolized by the colors Yellow (imperial traditions), Blue (western influences), and Red (Soviet and CCP influences).
The lecture highlighted how the interplay among these diverse elements has fostered a uniquely hybrid culture—characterized by remarkable adaptability and internal contradictions—that continues to shape China’s societal evolution.
The event also featured a stimulating panel discussion with Professor Michael Zheng Song (CUHK), Professor Guoqi Xu (HKU) and moderated by Professor Zhiwu Chen (HKU). Discussants echoed the idea that Chinese culture is boundless and ever-changing.
Thanks to all speakers and attendees – we look forward to future collaborations!
