      Abstract

In this session, we are thrilled to hear from Joy Lo Cheung, Chairwoman of Lo Kwee Seong Foundation, on her family’s evolving philanthropy strategy, on women’s philanthropy, and on the future of philanthropy in Asia. Joy’s grandfather, Dr. Lo Kwee Seong, CBE, JP, was a Hong Kong entrepreneur, art collector, and philanthropist who founded Vitasoy, the leading brand of soymilk in Hong Kong. In 1991, the Lo Kwee Seong Foundation was founded to promote vocational and technical education, general education, learning culture and the arts; to alleviate poverty, sickness and improve health; and to promote social welfare and charity.

Dr Lo’s creativity taught Joy that philanthropy, like business, is about finding niches that uplift people and communities. Joy’s parents also instilled in her both the drive for practical achievement and the grace of love and kindness. As she co-creates impactful solutions from soybean research to biomedical sciences, from digital careers to entrepreneurship, Joy sees philanthropy not just as giving, but also about nurturing character, sparking innovation, and creating pathways for lasting change. For this event at HKU, Pauline Yeung, adjunct associate professor at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, will begin with a presentation that gives a global overview of family philanthropy before moderating what promises to be an illuminating fireside chat and Q&A session with Joy on her vision and mission as a pioneering woman in philanthropy.

      About the Speaker

Joy Lo Cheung is Chairwoman of the Lo Kwee Seong Foundation who leads with entrepreneurial giving as a transforming catalyst of people and communities. Her grandfather Dr. Lo Kwee Seong envisioned soybean as ‘the cow of China’ and founded Vitasoy, which nourishes generations. His legacy of giving through education and culture continues to enrich our community.

Inspired by Dr. Lo’s passion to transform ideas into multipliers of economic, social, educational and cultural value, Joy moves beyond charity to create innovative and pivotal pathways for change. LKSF’s patented climate resilient soybeans boosts farmer incomes, improves soil quality and nutrition among communities in China, South Africa and Pakistan. Light Be’s upward mobility social housing repurposes warehouses into homes and fosters families’ stability and resilience. Incubating and seeding entrepreneurs prepares a pipeline of talent for value creation and human flourishing.

Joy’s family supports six areas of philanthropy: Art & Museum, Scientific Research, Education, Future Careers, Entrepreneurship and Community. The newly built Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion and Art Ambassador Scheme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong serve as a hub of cultural scholarship, regional exchange and community education.

For Joy, the essence of philanthropy is acting kindly, paying it forward, and empowering others for good.
