Periods of financial distress and corporate restructuring present not only complex challenges but also exceptional opportunities for family businesses. This lecture explores both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of corporate restructuring and turnaround management, including the interplay between market cycles, inter-creditors dynamics, and the corporate restructuring analytical framework, with a special focus on the unique dynamics of Chinese family enterprises.
Topics will include: conceptual underpinnings of corporate restructuring and its implications for family business, characteristics and valuation methodologies for the distressed asset class, strategic approaches to restructuring and corporate turnarounds, and much more.
By blending financial theory, market analysis, and a case study, this talk will give you a front-row seat to one of the most exciting — and misunderstood — corners of global finance. Whether you’re aiming for a career in family business, consulting, banking, asset management, or private equity, you’ll leave with a sharper eye for spotting opportunity in the middle of market chaos.
James Choa brings over 20 years of expertise in private equity, hedge funds, investment banking, and operational turnaround management. He is the founder of Elfoso Holdings Limited, a private investment firm specializing in special situations and deep-value investments across global markets. Before founding Elfoso, James was a member of Goldman Sachs’ Asian Special Situations Group (ASSG) in Hong Kong, where he led multi-strategy investments across Asia, including pre-IPOs, distressed debt, buyouts, and other strategic investments. Prior to Goldman Sachs, James worked at a number of financial services firms, across private equity and investment banking. Mr. Choa received his MBA from the Wharton School, the University of Pennsylvania, in 2006 with a degree in Corporate Restructuring & Turnaround Management. He also graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania’s Management & Technology Program (M&T) as an undergraduate with dual degrees in Systems Engineering and Finance in 1998. James also shares his expertise in turnaround strategies by teaching “Special Situations: Creating Value in Distress, Restructuring, and Turnaround” at NYU Shanghai’s Master of Science in Quantitative Finance program.
