Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences International Symposium on “Utopia and Utopianism in the Contemporary Chinese Context: Texts, Ideas, Spaces”
Introduction

The Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences is pleased to present a series of events to reflect and debate on the idea of utopia and utopianism.

The lineup includes a keynote speech/distinguished lecture by Professor David Der-Wei Wang, HKU Hung Leung Hau Ling Distinguished Fellow in Humanities and Edward C. Henderson Professor of Chinese and Comparative Literature at Harvard University; an International Symposium on “Utopia and Utopianism in the Contemporary Chinese Context: Texts, Ideas, Spaces” jointly organized with the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China; and a film screening of “Making Friends with Mr. Zhang” directed by Miss Diao Cao.

Prof. David Der-Wei Wong will also attend a discussion session with Mr. Evans Chan, Director of “Datong: The Great Society” after a special screening of the documentary film, a Festival PLUS program presented by the 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival in conjunction with the Chamber Opera “Datong – The Chinese Utopia《大同》” . The program shares similar theme with the events presented by the Institute and provides more space for resonance.
