      Field Area: Modern Chinese History

      OVERVIEW

Zhang Yunfei is a PhD student in the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) at The University of Hong Kong. Before entering the PhD program, he completed his bachelor’s degree in History at Central China Normal University in Wuhan and a master in Chinese History at Fudan University in Shanghai.

His master’s thesis, entitled “Semicolonialist Pigs: The Pig management of Shanghai Municipal Council, 1928-1941” echoed the recent trilogy of studies on pigs. Different from the existing narrative that focus on the modernization of the animal industry from a nation-state perspective or emphasize imperial influences animal management of the colony. Yunfei unveiled the influence of  the network of mutiple overlapping imperialisms in modern East Asia on human-animal relations by case studies on meat inspection, render technology and pig trade both in and outside the Shanghai International Settlement.

      SHARING & EXPERIENCES

The history of twentieth-century China is not far  away from the present, and the shifting connections between history and reality drew Yunfei into this field, ultimately leading him here.

Born and raised in a state-owned industrial area, where every aspect of life depended on a state enterprise, Yunfei's curiosity about his personal history sparked an early interest in business history. His experience of the COVID-19 lockdowns in Wuhan and Shanghai further expanded his focus, leading him to incorporate science and technology—particularly the relationship between humans and non-humans—into his study of business history. More importantly, these experiences deepened Yunfei's desire to explore the history of twentieth-century China from a broader, more diverse perspective. With this aspiration, Yunfei has come to the Institute, where, under the supervision of Professor Ghassan Moazzin and Professor John Wong, he is exploring the interconnected history of economy, technology, and transnational interactions between China and the world.
