Hon Pansy Wong’s speech will focus on her journey from Hong Kong and into New Zealand politics and the importance of education, determination and networking. She will also include aspects from her Ethnic Affairs portfolio, for example the importance of international connections and businesses.
Hon Pansy Wong was born in Shanghai and grew up in Hong Kong before immigrating to New Zealand in 1974. In 1996 she entered Parliament as New Zealand’s first MP of Asian ethnicity and in 2008 became the first New Zealand Cabinet Minister of Asian descent. Her Ministerial portfolios cover Ethnic Affairs and Women’s Affairs. She is also Associate Minister of Energy and Resources, Disability Issues and ACC. Outside of politics, Mrs Wong is also well connected in the business world. She is visiting Hong Kong with an 8-person business delegation to mark the occasion of the signing of the Hong Kong-New Zealand Closer Economic Partnership Agreement.
