      About the Speaker

      Robert Bickers is Professor of History at the University of Bristol, and Director of the British Inter-university China Centre, a collaboration between the universities of Bristol. Manchester and Oxford. He is the author of The Scramble for China: Foreign Devils in the Qing Empire, 1832 – 1914 (2011), Empire Made Me: An Englishman Adrift in Shanghai (2003), and Britain in China: Community, Culture and Colonialism, 1900 – 49 (1999).
