      Abstract

      Hong Kong is a nexus for business families over the world, with some families celebrating generations in the vibrant community. In this iteration of the HKU Family Wealth Series, the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (“IHSS”) is honoured to have invited Mr Mahesh Harilela to share his perspectives on how his family with as many as 165 members in Hong Kong ensure that the family’s values and business ethics are sustained generation after generation. Guest moderator Ms Pauline Yeung will guide the fireside chat, which promises to offer an enlightening look at how families in Hong Kong think about time, place and people.

       

      About the Speaker

      Mahesh Harilela is an entrepreneur and philanthropist, well-respected within the vibrant business community of Hong Kong. As a member of the renowned Harilela family, he has contributed to the diverse portfolio of the Harilela Group, which spans hospitality, real estate, finance, and more. In particular, the group owns and operates 15 hotels globally, including Hong Kong’s Holiday Inn Golden Mile and the London and Hong Kong-based brand The Hari.

      Mahesh’s insights and actions have had a profound impact on the Harilela Group’s operations and strategic direction. His work supports the group’s ventures into new areas like renewable energy, agriculture, advanced technology, and NewSpace Economy, thereby contributing to the Harilela family’s legacy of innovation and global engagement.

      Mahesh also actively participates in the Harilela Family Council, where he plays a crucial role as Convenor in areas such as preserving the family’s heritage, shaping family governance policies, and supporting the development of the family office. He also launched the Harilela 100 Talk Series at the Harilela Mansion that celebrates the diversity, openness, and cosmopolitan nature of Hong Kong through insightful discussions.

      Mahesh’s contributions reflect his deep commitment to both his family’s legacy and the broader community, showcasing his influence in fostering sustainable growth and family unity. Through his involvement, he helps to ensure that the values and business ethics of the family – which has as many as 165 members in Hong Kong – are maintained and passed down generation after generation.
